our virtual pilgrimage to santiago de compostela - how it will work

Pilgrims’ Mass
Our Virtual Pilgrimage will begin on 19 September with a special Pilgrims’ Mass. This will be held at 5:30pm in the Church of the Good Shepherd and will be led by The Bishop of Ebbsfleet. During the service, each pilgrim will receive a scallop shell and a Pilgrim Passport/Diary.

The Pilgrims’ Mass will be livestreamed for the benefit of our online congregation. The login details can be obtained by emailing us at goodshepherdchard@gmail.com. Members of the online congregation will receive their Pilgrim Passport/Diary by email (or by post on request).

Our Walk
On 20 September we will begin our walking. Over the course of a fortnight, we will attempt between us to walk 486 miles, being the distance of the famous ‘Camino Francés’ from Saint-Jean-Pied-De-Port (France) to Santiago De Compostela (Spain).

By 6pm each day, pilgrims should let Alison know how many miles they have covered and send photos of their walk. Mileages and photos can be sent:
  • by email – goodshepherdchard@gmail.com
  • by phone or text message – 01460 68779 / 07966 391103
  • by Messenger
  • by WhatsApp

At 7pm each day, we will meet on Zoom. Our daily Zoom meetings will be structured as follows:

‘Coming Together’ and Admin – c 20 mins
We will greet each other and share photos and stories from our day.
We will work out where we would be if we were walking the Camino for real and where we might be spending the night in a pilgrim hostel!

Worship – c 20 mins
We will participate in an act of worship, e.g. compline with a meditation.

Social Time – c 20 mins
We will enjoy some relaxed social time together over a glass of rioja!
Our sessions will also be made available to watch on the church’s Vimeo page.

Sponsorship
As we have been unable to hold our Strawberry Tea and Summer Fair this year, the Virtual Pilgrimage provides us with an opportunity to raise some funds for the church. Please encourage your family and friends to sponsor you.
